    Yifan Jia is a PhD candidate and visiting lecturer at the Dickson Poon School of Law at King's College London (KCL). She is also a research associate at the Global Governance Centre at Geneva Graduate Institute and a sponsored university associate at the Law Centre at Georgetown University. Additionally, she serves as a senior editor for the King's Student Law Review.
     
    She used to teach at the Department of Political Economy and the Department of War Studies at KCL, including teaching the first module specializing in sanctions among UK universities. She used to work as a research assistant at the Transnational Law Institute and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). She was a funded research guest at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg in 2023.
     
    Yifan Jia holds degrees in law and economics. She studied human rights and criminal justice at the University of Aberdeen, Beijing Normal University, and Peking University/Lund University. She was a criminal defence attorney in Beijing before joining KCL. In her spare time, she is also a comedian, novel writer, and podcast producer.
     

    Research description

     
    Yifan Jia's PhD project is a social-legal study on the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regimes, which combines doctrinal analysis with the empirical method to explore the legitimacy and effectiveness of the Magnitsky sanctions. It is one of the first projects that aims to subject the design, actual functioning, and underpinning justifications of global human rights sanctions to an academically rigorous assessment.
     
    Yifan Jia's project won the Modern Law Review Scholarship, Horowitz Foundation Award for Social Policy, Harold D. Lasswell Award for International Relations and Foreign Affairs, Gilbert Murray UN Study Award, and Max Planck Luxembourg Scholarship. The project's results have been presented at academic conferences in various countries, including the UK, the US, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, and Japan.
