Abstract
This is the final report of NRDC Project B3.1 (2002-03). The aim of this project was to review what is known about adult numeracy, to identify gaps in our knowledge and understanding, draw out the implications for practice and make recommendations for further research to practitioners, policy-makers and researchers. The review spans English-language sources covering research from around the world judged to be relevant to, as well as directly about, adult numeracy/mathematics teaching and learning and teacher education, mainly at the levels of mathematics encompassed by the Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum (i.e. from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2) (BSA, 2001). Outcomes of the project comprise this report and a searchable online bibliography with annotations (www.nrdc.org.uk/ and www.maths4life.org.uk/).
