Abstract

This study describes the design and implementation of a new cell, which allows the study of drug release from tablets by macro-Fr-IR ATR imaging with a diamond ATR accessory. The tablet formulation can be compacted directly on the ATR crystal. The distribution of various components in the tablet can be determined by FT-IR imaging. Subsequently, water flow around the tablet can be commenced and the changes in this distribution monitored. Advantages of this system are a high chemical specificity, which allows the analyses of many different materials, and a relatively high spatial resolution. The described cell was applied to study a model tablet consisting of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and caffeine.
