Abstract

There is an increasing interest in integrating diverse and distributed health data repositories for the purpose of clinical research. While today’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) makes this approach increasingly feasible, such applications face technical challenges such as addressing clinical data held in different structures and representations, expressing a query in a way independent of these specific representations, ensuring secure communication of sensitive data and having some means to assure the users of the system of the veracity of the data.
In this paper, we present a novel architectural solution to addressing those issues. In particular, we discuss the design considerations and software engineering approach we took for developing the Electronic Health Records for Clinical Research (EHR4CR) system, which enables integration of heterogeneous hospital patient data resources distributed in several European countries to identify and recruit patients for clinical trials.
