This paper presents preliminary results from a three-dimensional (3-D) microwave breast imaging algorithm based on the DBIM algorithm and the two-step iterative shrinkage/thresholding method (TwIST). To deal with the ill-posed 3-D problem effectively, we apply optimization techniques that include frequency hopping, an L1-norm r e g u l a t i o n method, and a two-step approach which initially estimates the bresist average dielectric properties Our results demonstrate that these techniques are necessary in order to reconstruct the breast interior, for data produced using five 16-antenna rings and accurate numerical breast phantoms from the UW-Madison repository.
