Abstract
This chapter accounts for how an independent India struggled to cope with requests for political asylum made by a succession of defectors from the Communist bloc in the period after 1947. The fact that India possessed a free press made it very awkward for its Government to handle such cases with due discretion and incidents of Cold War defection frequently disrupted relations between New Delhi, Moscow and Washington.
