Braidotti within reason

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Rosi Braidotti is a major philosopher and feminist thinker, authoring numerous academic articles, monographs, anthologies, and reference manuals. She is a highly influential critical posthumanist. Her non-anthropocentric vision of posthuman ethical subjectivity, her drawing on science for its realisation and vision of transdisciplinary posthumanities intersecting with the sciences, based on mutual respect, are all to be lauded. Though there is much to praise in Braidotti’s scholarship, there are difficulties in achieving the mutual respect between the posthumanities and sciences that she desires. This respect is more likely achieved by grounding her non-anthropocentric vision in an unwaveringly accurate appreciation of science and consistently adopting universal standards of sound reasoning accepted in the sciences. Given Braidotti’s influence in critical posthumanism, and in the interests of helping facilitate more effective dialogue between critical posthumanism and science, I shine a light on these difficulties. In a nutshell, Braidotti’s vision is compelling, but how she argues for it is often not.
