Characterisation of the <500nm fraction of airborne particulates using TENT, EDX and EELS

Abstract

Current research suggests that atmospheric particles act as a catalyst for a complex set of reactions that involve different oxidation states of transition metals and the generation of reactive oxygen species. Determination of the composition of individual particles, the distribution of transition metals, their oxidation state, and the binding characteristics. of transition metals to particles using advanced AEM techniques, such as EELS and EDX will provide new information on the interaction of particles with pulmonary tissues.
