Abstract

Functional movement disorder and related functional neurological disorder subtypes are an exciting and rapidly growing area of clinical neuroscience. Great progress has been made over the past several decades, yet challenges remain – including continuing to recruit the best and brightest across the wide range of relevant specialties to care for and conduct research in this underserved yet highly prevalent patient population. In this chapter, the four co-editors of this case-based textbook in functional movement disorder reflect on their own personal journeys in the field. The steadfast hope is that the perspectives shared will energize clinicians and scientists alike to join us and other likeminded colleagues in working to address unmet clinical and research needs in functional movement disorder and related conditions.
