Abstract

This text is a chapter of the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition 'Premonition of the Light. The Life and Works of Blanca Varela'. The text focuses on the artistic and intellectual development of Varela's poetry as part of a group of writers and visual artists that began their production within the 1940s. Taking distance from a well known category in Peruvian Literary historiography, the 'generation of the 1950s', this essay places Varela's work within a wider period and historical context, that of the democratic changes of the post Second World War. It also places Varela within a modern tradition founded by early-20th century writers José María Eguren and César Vallejo and presents her as part of the team that formulated a modern national poetics that is still relevant at this point of the 21st century.
