Abstract

Chatbots and personal assistants from Amazon, Apple and Google are a move towards conversational interfaces and a very particular form of organisational media based on new developments in Artificial Intelligence technology. This chapter looks at the rise of this technology, the challenges of teaching computers to process language, and the reasons why despite it all companies are invested to establish this technology -- which lies in the influential role language has for our societies and the hidden link between language and intelligence.
