Cosmology and its ‘Problems’ in Ps. Justin’s Quaestiones et Responsiones ad Orthodoxos

Abstract

Collections of questions and answers (ἐρωταποκρίσεις) are a rich
archive of individual and collective worries providing historians with
a kaleidoscopic view of Late Antique and Byzantine society. This contribution
focuses on a rich but neglected vein of enquiries on cosmology
as they are attested in Ps.-Justin’s Q uaestiones et responsiones ad
orthodoxos, with a view to analysing the ways in which cosmological
‘problems’, objections, and enquiries are addressed as part of the process
of ζήτησις (‘enquiry’).
