Abstract

The DISCE research project has enabled an exploration of the conditions that both enable and inhibit creative and cultural work/practice across Europe, through an ecological case study approach. We mapped career development pathways of CCWs through five stages from early access to education and early careers towards the establishment of sustainable careers – not achieved by all – and finally, towards a potential stage of being able to foster and support other CCWs. Adopting the capability approach to the data analysis, we have articulated for each key stage specific capabilities that enable access to sustainable creative and cultural careers. This approach has enabled a detailed exploration into the lived realities of workers within a specific geographical locale and allowed a
better understanding of the opportunities and barriers they face contributing to their local creative economies.
