Abstract

The Nie Lei Company was a powerful and influential organized crime group in the Chinese city of Qingdao until a concerted state operation closed it down in 2010. This paper looks at the group's legacy on the political-criminal nexus in China. Despite the collapse of the powerful Nie Lei Company in China, there are suggestions that its legacy has left a structure in place for similar organized crime groups to operate.
