Abstract

In the centenary of the death of the Afro-Brazlian writer Lima Barreto (1881-1922), the article surveys the different moments of the reception of his works in Brazil, with a focus on his peioneer anti-racist stance. The article shows how Lima Barreto went from being considered a "resentful" author for touching on questions relation to racism (in the first half of the 20th century) to becoming a visionary (a major pioneer figure in the history of the fight agaisnt racism). The article does this by articulating the national context in Brazil with the broader global history of the fight against racism throughout the 20th century.
