Abstract
This essay proposes that abstraction—in form, process and materials—became a fitting visual expression of technology in Southeast Asia and were precedents in the region to artworks using technology as a medium, including but not limited to video and television. It examines this through three figures, Lee Aguinaldo (1933–2007, Philippines), Choong Kam Kow (锺金鈎, b. 1934, Malaysia) and Lin Hsin Hsin (林欣欣, Singapore).
The essay was produced for the online microsite/online publication of National Gallery Singapore for the exhibition "Nam June Paik: The Future is Now," which traveled to the museum from December 2021 to March 2022.
