N2 - At the centre of the research design for DevelopingInclusive and Sustainable Creative Economies (DISCE) are regional case studiesin ten European regions. We argue for the importance of adopting an ‘ecological’approach to understanding (and managing) creative economies. Such an approachnecessarily influences the conceptual and methodological framing of each workpackage, and of the DISCE project overall. Therefore, this report discusses theactivities of Work Package 3, 4 and 5 (WP3-5) together, and their impact uponthe case study framework for DISCE as a whole. Drawing on the methodological literature (Stake 2005; Easton2010; Gillham 2010; Swanborn 2010; Remenyi 2012; Yin 2014; Thomas 2016), thisreport begins with a discussion of the distinctive features of case studyresearch, and why case studies are particularly appropriate and useful forDISCE. It then gives more detail of the specific approach to case studyresearch the DISCE team has developed, and explains how we will generate andgather our data. The paper concludes with a presentation of the provisionalcase study sequencing and timetable, as well as further details of ourprocedures for analysing the case study data, and our plans for reporting.
