Abstract

Production processes are at the heart of our understanding of the great transformations seen in the twentieth century, yet have been little studied. It is too often assumed that they have been well understood. This paper notes the abstract way production featured in global histories, and its disappearance from advanced historiography of the past decades, notable for its concern with consumption. It points to a critical moment in the 1970s and 1980s when production was studied critically, in a project brought to a premature end, and notes too the increasing interest in questions of production from a number of different perspectives, that are putting this central problem back on the agenda.
