Abstract

In response to the AHRC's call for evidence on the value of research into the arts for life in the UK, the paper argues for the benefits to society of the theatre. It covers economic impact, the social role of theatre, the theatrical memory and the theatre of the future, and concludes by suggesting the importance of virtual theatres such as Second Life.
