Abstract

Engagement at work is an extensively researched topic that has attracted the interest of academics and of industry. It is defined as being personally present at work reflected in displaying vigour, dedication and absorption. Researchers have developed measures of engagement and presented evidence about its antecedents and outcomes. These are reviewed in the entry. Although engagement has been predominantly viewed as an individual-level psychological construct, there is growing interest in organizational engagement. This is also reflected in the interest among organizational consultants who have marketed engagement in industry promoting the use of attitude surveys and the promise of a link between engagement and organizational performance. Because of these different perspectives, engagement has become a controversial topic with debates about its relation to similar constructs, its application in industry and its unitarist underpinnings. It also offers a rich agenda for future research and analysis.
