Abstract

Interest in the epidemiology of atopic dermatitis has risen in recent years because the disease prevalence is on the increase, and because atopic dermatitis can be a very miserable and costly long-term condition. Since atopic dermatitis tends to be the first allergic disease to develop in early life, an increasing number of birth cohorts have studied the condition alongside food allergies, hay fever, and asthma in order to understand the relationship between these diseases. This chapter provides an overview of the epidemiology of atopic dermatitis, highlighting some of the important developments and gaps in current knowledge from classical descriptive epidemiology to immunological and genetic findings in cohort studies.
