Abstract
With the ongoing reconfiguration of the maternity workforce, the modernisation agenda in the National Health Service (NHS), and the current staffing crisis in midwifery there is increasing scrutiny of the roles and responsibilities of the various health professionals involved in the care of childbearing women. A new occupational group on the scene are maternity assistants and doulas. Some midwives are hostile to doulas and maternity assistants, fearing that their jobs are threatened, whereas others welcome the development of new support posts for midwives and better support for women,' so what is the current picture abroad and in the United Kingdom (UK) and what is the current evidence?
