Abstract

Fidel Castro was undoubtedly the most prominent leader in Latin America during the twentieth century. Leading a quixotesque guerrilla movement, he managed to depose Batista’s government in Cuba through a revolution and resist the US attempts to overthrow the new regime in the island. His alliance with the Soviet Union to counterpoint the US pressure drove him and Cuba to the heart of the Cold War. His leadership was forged through a contradictory movement of leveraging the life standards for Cuban population but also repressing and eliminating any form of opposition to his power. In this chapter, I will explore how Fidel Castro built his leadership model and how much he needed to chameleonically adapt it according to the changes in the global geopolitics and the ways this affected the Cuban state of revolution.
