Abstract

The national story of China's rise is an important component of government messaging in the era of Xi Jinping since 2012. The story that he and the elite leaders around him, along with their officials, have been telling is infused with components that convey emotion, a sense of historic destiny and purpose, and the idea that the country's re-emergence as a global power is something that comes from the scientific laws of historic development, and because of moral justification. Through looking at the various ways that Xi speaks of his idea of China's renaissance, this chapter shows a definite shift from the era of the technocratic discourse under his predecessor Hu Jintao, to one of a language and narratives geared towards emotions and visions.
