Abstract
André de Gouveia was a Portuguese humanist and one of the most outstanding sixteenth-century pedagogues, having occupied distinguished positions in important educational institutions in France and Portugal. A man of singular character and personality, Gouveia’s progressive views influenced the educational programs and the ethos of these institutions.
