Abstract
This chapter addresses the position of Greece in the eurozone crisis. In particular, it focuses on the structural imbalances and internal contradictions of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Within this context, the global financial crisis acted as an asymmetric shock, hitting different economic structures in different ways. This structural analysis explains why certain countries, such as Greece, were singled out by the markets as the weakest links of the system and were subjected to massive speculative attacks against their sovereign debts.
