Abstract

The Darzi report (2008) focused on a framework to ensure that the quality of care provided throughout the NHS in England moved towards uniform excellence. As part of the commitment to improve the quality of care, emphasis was placed on the use and publication of quality indicators by care providers. The report undertook to define and measure the quality of nursing care.

This article argues that in the current economic climate it is even more important that nursing is able to show quality care in terms that are recognised and valued by others. It explores what should be measured and why.
