This book examines types of enunciation and evocation of fear in series of stories published in Brazilian newspapers in the early twentieth century. Two perspectives used by journalists are analysed: one that sees violence as part of the everyday life, and the other one in which urban violence is approached as a war metaphor. These stories focus on violent crimes, eventually producing a symbology and a vocabulary that constitute contemporary narratives about fear in everyday life of large cities in Brazil.
