    Abstract

Pulmonary hypoplasia, incomplete development of the lung, is the commonest single abnormality found at post-mortem, being present in 15 to 20% of early neonatal deaths. It can be a primary condition but more often is secondary to a variety of antenatal events including reduction in amniotic fluid volume, intrathoracic space and fetal breathing movements.
