Abstract

This contribution offers a brief historical introduction of the relationship between international trade law and sustainable development. It focuses first on the limited role that sustainable development has played in the context of the multilateral trading system of the GATT/WTO. Secondly, it examines the growing relevance of sustainable development in the context of regional trade agreements (RTAs), in particular free trade agreements (FTAs) concluded in the last 20-30 years. Third, it addresses the most recent evolution (and ‘direction of travel’) focusing on both opportunities and challenges in deepening the integration between international trade and sustainable development.
