Abstract

Research and consensus among experts by experience both suggest that the road to specialist treatment for eating disorders is long and winding, strewn with many potential barriers and lost opportunities and other traps for the unwary. At the same time, prior to accessing specialist eating (disorder treatment, there are many opportunities for prompt and effective prevention and early intervention along this long road. Both are arguably more cost and time saving than allowing symptoms to become more entrenched and requiring specialist eating disorder interventions that may result in an avoidable long, arduous and uncertain recovery journey.
