Abstract

This article addresses the relationship of Arno Schmidt's writing to Dante, pursuing in particular a link through Dante's representation of Hell as an allegory for the Holocaust. While Weninger is critical of too easy an association between Dante and Schmidt - indeed he points out that Schmidt himself was sceptical about such links - he finds veiled traces of Dante in Schmidt's postwar writings.
