Abstract

This chapter focuses on the use of electronic assistive technologies and telecare in England and the extent to which these can be said to be personalised. The introductory section briefly defining key terms before the chapter describes key policy narratives relating to both telecare and personalisation. It then offers a critical assessment of research evidence for the impact of telecare and personalisation. A discussion is then provided which focuses on the issue of whether personalised telecare is possible, or desirable, and what consequences may flow from current policies for older telecare users and the kinds of actions that may need to be taken to use telecare in ways that are ethical, and best support outcomes for older telecare users. The discussion is organised in five sections: The impact of performance indicators, austerity, the replacement of person-centred approaches to service delivery with personalisation, and key issues with personalised support. These are contrasted in the final part of the discussion with described benefits of person-centred approaches. The concluding part of the paper draws together the strands of argument from within a principlist ethical framework.
