Abstract

Liberal Christianity arose in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in response to the Enlightenment and modernism. The progressive force of liberal Christianity concerned itself with rationalism and individual liberty, in response to authoritarian fundamentalism and antimodernism. While earlier treatments argued that liberal Christianity was unsustainable, contemporary developments have shown that it remains a major feature of twenty-first century Christianity and that it enjoys considerable influence throughout the West.
