Abstract

The rapidly changing information landscape has not only provided a period of great change for library and information professionals, but also one of great opportunity. Despite traditional services being either scaled back or automated, those who are willing to embrace new tools and technologies will nevertheless continue to be highly sought after, although it may be from outside the traditional library setting. One of the most important areas of growth within the modern information society is the building and sharing of high-quality ontologies. This is an area in which the librarian can contribute as much as other professions, plus it has much to gain from the skills and knowledge of library and information professionals. If digital resources are to appear in the most useful manner possible, then they need to incorporate good ontologies. Creating, identifying, and using good ontologies requires the help of the library and information professional.
