Abstract

The chapter offers a critical approach to theories of globalisation, one that acknowledges the role that ‘ordinary cities’ and its citizens have in the making of the story of globalisation.

I argue that globalisation theories function as a discourse that ignores historical and geographical uniqueness, and as such legitimises a particular view of the world. So my call to understand globalisation as processes which are differently and unequally experienced is an attempt to incorporate a critical perspective on globalisation, one that acknowledges other players in the making of the story of globalisation.

By implication this position recognises how other groups of people (those not involved in central governments or global financial centres) are implicated in the making of the story of globalisation. This in turn, will have consequences for conceptualising place and for how people understand themselves in relation to specific localities. The chapter is a critical reflection on globalisation theories and the implications of this discourse for understanding the relationship between place and identity.
