Abstract

The philosophical orations (dialexeis, “talks”) of Maximus of Tyre open a window not only onto the historical development of Platonism in the later second century ce, but also onto the integration of philosophy into elite culture in the period of the so-called Second Sophistic. Their blend of simplified philosophical content with lively and elegant rhetorical form is not exactly paralleled in any other surviving ancient author.
