Medieval Philosophical Writings on the Powers of the Soul: From Aquinas to Ockham

Can Lowe, Russell L. Friedman

Research output: Book/ReportBookpeer-review

Abstract

The book presents a variety of hitherto untranslated medieval texts on the relation between the soul and its powers. The texts are presented in such a way that each text can be seen as part of the medieval debate, responding to, or criticizing, another text also found in the book. In addition to providing translations of texts by well-known authors like Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and Ockham, the book also includes texts by thirteenth- and fourteenth-century thinkers like Durand of St.-Pourçain and James of Viterbo whose accounts of the soul and its powers are not well known.
