Abstract

Models of aeolian landscape development integrate and reflect contemporary understanding of the physical processes and fundamental principles involved, and are often the only method for exploring dune development over long temporal scales and analyzing dune fields on other planets and moons. This chapter considers key conceptual models for describing and explaining dune formation and the controls on various dune types, followed by a review of quantitative numerical methods of modeling the development of dunes and dune fields in two-dimensional and three-dimensional domains, including a discussion of recent developments in coupled airflow-sand transport models as well as cellular automaton algorithms.
