    Abstract

The article explores the effects of liberalisation and economic restructuring over the labour market conditions and the occupational structure of the largest Brazilian metropolitan area, Sao Paulo. Swift economic liberalisation combined with slow economic growth has boosted unemployment, informality and income inequalities. One of the main axes of these trends has been the decline in the manufacturing output; since Sao Paulo is the core site for the manufacturing industry in Brazil the regions has experienced the worst impacts.
