Music as aristocratic pastime in the Stato da Mar: The Cypriot madrigals of Giandomenico Martoretta

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Giandomenico Martoretta’s Terzo libro di madrigali a quattro voci (1554) contains several pieces dedicated to Cypriot aristocrats and provides unparalleled even if limited evidence for musical life in mid sixteenth-century Cyprus under Venetian rule. It also sheds light on the wider cultural context including linguistic diversity, familiarity with Italian literary production and musical aptitude. Most importantly, it demonstrates that the island’s elites actively and consciously pursued a lifestyle that brought them closer to the metropolis at a time when Venice was their only hope for survival in the face of the Ottoman threat.
