Abstract

This chapter explores labeling issues, delves into how people make judgments about nanotechnology in the absence of specific information, provides a snapshot of recent research on awareness and decisions about nanotechnology. Risk communication-including specific forms of communications ranging from labeling to stakeholder engagement-is called for by nanotechnology regulatory strategies in some nations. Nanotechnology and its potential risks are impossible to perceive without descriptions and visualizations-that is, communications. Nanotechnology is intangible, invisible, scientifically complex, and replete with risk unknowns; it promises solutions to many of the world’s ills and has a wildly touted economic potential. It concludes with an appeal for more risk communication about nanotechnology and more science in nanotechnology risk communication. Risk communication-including specific forms of communications ranging from labeling to stakeholder engagement-is called for by nanotechnology regulatory strategies in some nations.
