    Abstract

Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with structural brain abnormalities and compromised integration of cerebral function. Working memory, whose deficits are among the core cognitive abnormalities in schizophrenia, is subserved by fronto-parietal neural networks undergoing robust remodelling during adolescence. In this paper we discuss findings from our multi-modal neuroimaging studies including DTI in early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) and adult-onset schizophrenia, and functional MRI during a verbal working memory task in EOS. Our data are suggestive of a wide functional disintegration (without any compensatory hyperactivation within the networks involved in verbal working memory) early in the course of the illness, which may be more pronounced in EOS compared to adult-onset schizophrenia.
