Abstract

Neurodivergent content and neurodiverse engagement have grown significantly over the past ten years with the rise of the neurodiversity movement. This chapter begins with a short summary of approaches, explaining the key concepts of normalcy, neurotypicality, neurodiversity and neuroqueering. It then shows how digital platforms, connectivity and new media and communication technologies, along with the work of the neurodiversity movement, are transforming forms and modes of engagement through blogs, websites, digital film and television. This has enabled a major shift for neurodiverse audiences to move from being consumers of media content in which they/we were largely absent or negatively represented, to becoming advocate-producers, actors, directors and writers. The slogan 'Nothing about us without us' is now key to thinking with content produced about neurodivergent people, but also provides scholars with ways to understand all media content through the lens of neurodiversity and to neuroqueer media theory, engagement and practice.
