Bibliographical note

Brazil's active participation in World War II by sending more than 25,000 soldiers to the battle front in Italy is largely neglected in historiography, and is even more the artistic production of some of these soldiers, reflecting the experience of the war. In this text, I analyze the works produced by Carlos Scliar during the period when he was on the Italian front and later exposed in Brazil under the title of “Caderno de Guerra”. Before presenting and properly analyzing the “caderno de Guerra”, I draw some considerations on art in war in general and in particular in World War II, correlating the experience and expression of Scliar with a more comprehensive context.
