Abstract

This article argues that Obama’s policy of ‘leading from behind’ through diplomatic means has contributed to an already existing trend redefining America’s standing in the Middle East. Obama’s soft power approach came at the worst time as the region was sliding into a state of insecurity and instability. Unable to quickly adapt to the new circumstances, the Obama administration reacted hesitantly at best, providing regional players with a void they were able to exploit. Consequently, in 2017 the US can no longer influence the region as would be expected from a true superpower.
