Abstract

Energy consumption in mobile and wireless access networks is already an issue, and increases in required data capacities of upcoming 4G systems point to further increases in energy consumption being very difficult to avoid. Both for environmental and operational expenditure reasons, energy consumption of such systems must therefore be minimised. This chapter provides a high-level overview of energy consumption in access networks. It analyses the contributory factors to such energy consumption, considering carbon emissions as well as energy, and also delving into areas related to the life-cycles of mobile and wireless access networks (including manufacturing, raw materials extraction, etc.—which can account for a very large proportion of the total energy consumption and carbon emissions). Next it discusses various means for saving energy, again taking a wide-ranging perspective. It considers hardware solutions for energy saving, network dimensioning including dynamic solutions such as power saving modes, and link efficiency improvements, among others. Moreover, it considers the potential and practicality of renewable energy deployment for mobile and wireless access networks, attempting to resolve the situation be getting energy for ”free”. Considering all of the aspects covered in this chapter, it is clear that energy consumption and carbon emissions related to mobile and wireless access networks is a challenging problem, which requires multi-dimensional analysis in order to find an optimal solution. The chapter attempts to provide the framework and understanding for such analysis.
