Abstract

Objectives:

The objective of the patient experience of care study was to obtain patients views on the care and treatment they received in a dental academic health science centre.

Methods:

Patients complete an anonymous online satisfaction questionnaire following their treatment using the Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) framework. The Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) payment framework enables commissioners to reward excellence by linking a proportion of providers’ income to the achievement of local quality improvement goals. The framework aims to embed quality within commissioner-provider discussions and to create a culture of continuous quality improvement, with stretching goals agreed in contracts on an annual basis.

Results:

The audit found 76% (n=24) of patients felt involved in their care, 69% felt they had worries and fears listened to, 65% felt their privacy was maintained during treatment, 75% felt they had medication side effects explained, 87% were happy with contact after discharge. An overall CQUIN score of 74% was achieved.

Conclusions:

Although all areas scored above the centrally set 60% score, there are areas of patient care that can be improved. Patient feedback needs to included in curriculum to ensure students are aware of patient experience and their role in creating a positive patient experience.

The study highlighted a need for the development of a dental specific CQUIN framework with the current tool focused on the requirements of patient experience in inpatient settings. The authors believe UK Institutions of healthcare higher education; as influential leaders and educators of the future dental healthcare workforce must engage in generative thinking to create effective strategic plans to help meet the nation's growing health-care needs. One way of achieving this is by influencing health policy at a high level such as leading the development of a dental specific CQUIN framework.
