Abstract

Periodontal disease is one of the two major oral diseases. It is a chronic inflammatory condition which results from the host's response to a persisting bacterial challenge from the plaque biolfilm. Its destructive form, periodontitis, affects at least 20% of the adult population. The restoration of the periodontal tissues during periodontal therapy has long been an important goal, but in most cases it remains elusive. This chapter is intended as an introduction to periodontal disease aimed at the non-clinical scientist without expert clinical knowledge of the disease. It provides an overview of the structure of the periodontal tissues, an overview of the clinical and pathological features of the condition, and a short discussion of current periodontal therapy.
