Abstract
The essay discusses the relationship between visuality and writing during three moments of Spanish American modernity while revealing three different ways of ‘seeing’ or conceiving vision that are intimately related to socio-cultural processes, technologies and new fields of scientific interest. The essay analyses poetry, prose and visual imagery by Cuban José Martí, Mexican José Juan Tablada, Argentinean Oliverio Girondo and Peruvian Jorge Eduardo Eielson; and also discusses stereography, illustrated postcards and cybernetics.
